Day 7: ReMe Retreats' Favorite Things - Art Supplies - Hardware!

Today we'll continue the "ReMe Retreats' Favorite Things - Art Supplies!" Series.  In no particular order; JodiPenny, and Jean are taking turns while sharing a few of their creative must-haves.  In the following, Jean's will share her passion for Hardware.

*************************************************************************************************
In the studio, I'm surrounded by some of my favorite finds from
Hardware Stores...anvils, snips, pliers, hammers, and more!
Whenever I visit a new town, especially a small town with a history, one of my first stops is always the local hardware store.  If I'm lucky, I discover one that's been there forever.

I generally fall in love with everything about it.  From the merchandise and plants displayed on the front sidewalk to that distinct hardware-store-smell that hits me when I open the front door; from the well worn uneven wooden floors to bin after bin of mysterious parts and pieces; from the chain, and the wire, and the tools, and the seeds, to the owner who has been there
as long as the store and always has a story to share!

You never know what you'll find at the Hardware Store!  When I walked the hallowed aisles at Brown's in Mt. Gilead, NC, I tried to do so with my eyes and mind wide open.  I want to see everything, while opening my heart to the alternative possibilities of each and every piece that I discover.  Lots of pictures are good too!

My old school favorite hammer was once my Dad's.
I'm sure that he purchased it at a Hardware Store in Pittsburgh, PA.

If a trip to The Hardware Store puts you in kid-in-the-candy-store mode, would you please share your favorite stores, sections, or finds with us?

If you know the feeling that I've described; but you just don't share my passion for all things hardware, would you please describe what stores, supplies, or experiences do make your socks go up and down?

Thank you for visiting; be sure to check back tomorrow for another chance to win.

  1. I love garden centers, especially Logan's in Raleigh, NC. I love to wander through their greenhouse and the store looking at all of the seasonal goodness. The plants and pots and garden accessories are a feast for the eyes and their cafe serves delicious lunches!

    1. Donna, I didn't realize that we were so close to each other! I've never been to Logan's, and it's the first time that I've heard of a cafe at a garden center. Big Bloomers in Sanford, NC, is one of my personal favorites.

  3. I like the tools and the washers and sometimes even the paint at hardware stores....I'm always looking for obscure things though that my little hardware store doesn't have!!! Oh and I want to steal all the paint chip samples but I don't......(:

    1. Hi Ali! I have to admit that sometime I just can't resist the lure of the paint chip samples. ;-)

  5. I love old hardware stores too! But since I can't hardly find them, I go for junk dealers. There is one I absolutely love, in Teague Texas, called Bodine's. It is outdoor and some shed, over a half acre or so. You have to wear jeans and sturdy shoes, but there are some great finds there!

    1. We're definitely kindred spirits, Cheryl! No matter how much I complain about the clutter that surrounds me, the lure of a good junk dealer is just too strong to resist. I'm probably lucky that Bodine's isn't in North Carolina. ;-)

  7. I enjoy a good art store; not just a craft store. The art supplies challenge me because we all know about paper and pens but I like to look around, inspect closely, and find something that I know nothing about. A new challenge or toy helps me to expand my knowledge. It's loads of fun.

    1. I agree completely, Autumnleaf! I love that the most obscure stores, those that are completely unrelated to arts or crafts of anything of interest to me, can often provide such creative inspiration. For example, a good bait and tackle shop. ;-)

  8. I adore hardware stores. I love all the little gadgets and goodies. I love to find storage products and I look for things to add texture to my artwork. I love hardware stores as much as I love office supply stores.

    1. Me too, Jen! The best of them embrace their clutter, and I'm drawn to that. I also love that I can walked the same cluttered store time after time again and still make new discoveries.

  12. I love art stores but can also find nifty items at dollar stores, fabric stores, auto parts stores! Always looking for stencils and mark-making items. Even kept a gasket from a motorcycle repair for using on my gel plate! :)

  13. i have a thing for washers! i pick them up at home depot but my favorite is when i find rusty ones in the street or stray place. i had a favorite art store...artist oasis... that sadly, closed years ago. i am not quite over that yet! but jerry's art-a-rama is good for being tempted and inspired.

    1. The rusty ones are the best, Ellie! When traveling with friends, I warn them that I might unintentionally hip check them to get to a "good one", lol

I didn't realize that you were so close to me. I live about an hour south of Artist Oasis in Vass, NC. In fact, just this week, Jodi and I opened our studio spaces here in town. Perhaps you'll road trip down for a visit one day. :-)
